STL Collection

slip cast porcelain
The STL Collection is a series of functional objects made from slip cast porcelain, designed to reflect the process by which they are made. The objects are first modeled in 3D CAD software, and then exported to file format called “Stereolithography” (.STL) for 3D printing. This process typically translates the form into thousands of flat polygons. For these objects, I decrease the resolution of the file to expose a more “pixelated” version, ultimately referencing the STL format and 3D printing process in the final objects.
The surface highlights the texture of the 3D printed layers, ultimately speaking to the initial moment of production. My intention was that these objects can highlight questions about our relationship to objects that can be somewhat anonymous. Can the traces of an object’s production communicate something about the intent of this piece or its contents?
